Where are the Jews that play Rock and Roll?

I am flooded by christian friends who go to "Spirit Fest" or "Rockin for the Cross" or some other christian music festival. There are christian radio stations, christain book stores, and christian music stores. Why then, is there no Jewish modern music to be heard? Can anyone give me leads to where I can find modern (ie, not Klesmer) Jewish music?

Dear Lee, Idon't know where you live but find hopefully a Friday night service with Shlomo Carlebach music, usually starts with music on instruments and then sung- pure "Jewish Soul Music' and timeless. Secondly try a website such as jewishmusic.com where you can select from a very wide choice and listen to short previews. There is also plenty of modern Israeli music available. Ruth

The Knitting Factory in New York City specializes in Jazz and alternative music, and they have a music label and produce CDs. Many of the musicians are Jewish and some use Jewish musical themes in their music. Here's the Knitting Factory's website. If you have any thoughts about this music, please come and post your thoughts . . .

In addition to www.jewishmusic.com you might want to take a look at:
www.soundswrite.com
www.dannymaseng.com and
www.craignco.com
Good luck ... there's lots of contemporary Jewish music to be found. Janeen

Rick Recht from St. Louis has a good cd "Tov" that might fit the bill. Also, Yom Hadash from the Boston area are rockers. As for where to hear the music, that's a different problem. The musicians also complain that there's no "Grammy" or "Dove" award for Jewish music.

For places that have information on the web, try using the two magic words "Jewish" and "music" on these search engines:
www.metacrawler.com
www.google.com
The cultural palges of the English Forward newspaper has items about Jews involved in Rock and Roll, not "Jewish R&R" per se.
The Jewish youth groups Bnai Brith Youth Organization and Young Judaea, not to mention the Reform, Conservative, Orthodox groups, as well as Habonim Dror and Hashomer Hatzair and Betar, all would have information. You can get their websites easily, and also look them up in the American Jewish Year Book.
Also try the website for The Kitchen, which is a NYC club and the epicenter of new radical [culturally, not politically] Jewish music. John Zorn is a macher there ...

P.S. Don't forget Lou Reed!

And there's ALWAYS Kinky Jake Friedman and the Texas Jewboys--songs like, They're Not Making Jews like Jesus Anymore, We Reserve the Right to Refuse Service to You and what I still think is the best American song ever written about the Holocaust, Ride 'em Jewboy.

Lee,
Have you been living in a bubble for the past 25+ years??? There are so many pop-Jewish bands and musician out there that you'd have to be deaf dumb and blind not to come across them. In particular, the leaders of the resurgence in Jewish music...the top performing and recording Jewish band of all time...legends....SAFAM!!! They've been playing all over the World since 1974 and have been the inspiration for all the "Johnny-Come-Latelies" to Jewish music like Yom Hadash, Sam Glaser, Joe Black, Julie Silver, etc.... They were around before Craig Taubman, before Debbie Friedman, before Klexmer Conservatory Band, before Kol B'Seder...they are the real thing...the originals. Check them out at www.safam.com.
