Matzah
Cover
Germany(?), c.1900
Silk, cotton, lace, embroidered. Sewn
An attractive matzah cover done in silk embroidery. Such embroidered
covers had a place in many Jewish homes in Europe. They were often made
by the woman of the home, which in this example was probably in Germany.
The delicate lace surrounding the cover itself adds to the impressive
textile. The imagery includes a crown at the top and flowers, leaves and
wheat symbolizing the spring season of Passover.
Inscription(s): The Passover holiday; Next year in Jerusalem
