Piyuttim Hadashim ve-gam Yeshanim...
Scribe: Ezra Meir
Joannina, Greece, 1866
Paper, ink
This manuscript is a compilation of piyuttim (medieval poems) from
the city of Loannina in northern Greece. This city's community rite is
Romaniote, in keeping with the traditions of ancient Eretz Israel. Such
religious poems were extensively recited by the Jews of the Mediterranean
Basin and by the eastern Jews. The composers of such poems were quite
well known. The title page is decorated with an arch, trees and an urn
of flowers, in some ways reminiscent of the decorations on Islamic headstones
in the area.
