THE
ANGEL OF DEATH SEEKS MOSES
Early medieval poem
(anonymous)
The Angel
of Death was dispatched
against Moses: 'Speak soothing words
to Moses. Say to him, "O master, your
Master has sent me to you to request
your soul."' Never again did there arise
in Israel a prophet like Moses.[1]
The Angel
stormed forth, came to the
bush of thorns and said: 'Have you,
perchance, seen Moses, the chief master?'
It answered him: 'I have not
seen him since the day I was set
ablaze.' Never again did there arise in
Israel a prophet like Moses.
