Three sounds [kolot] travel from one end of the world to the
other: the sound of the sun's orb, the sound of Rome's tumult, and the
sound of the soul when it leaves the body. Some say, the sound of childbirth
as well. The sages entreated mercy for the soul when it leaves the body
and had the sound [of its anguish] stopped. (TB Yoma 20-21) |
There
are three things whose sound [kolot] travels from one end of
the world to the other, and though mortals are in between, they are
not aware of it: the sound of the day['s sun revolving on its course],
the [sound of] rain [clouds moving across the firmament], and the sound
of the soul when it leaves the body. (Genesis Rabbah 6)
