MORITZ OPPENHEIM: JEWISH IDENTITY in 19TH-CENTURY ART German Jewish artist Moritz Daniel Oppenheim (1800-1882), considered by many art historians the greatest Jewish genre painter of his time, was known as the "Painter of the Rothschilds and the Rothschild of Painters." SAMUEL BAK: HOLOCAUST PAINTINGS Bak's paintings in the Landscapes of Jewish Experience present relics of ruin and vestiges of order, a wasteland of Jewish tradition struggling out of its disarray. AKIVA KENNETH SEGAN: UNDER THE WINGS OF GOD In his Holocaust art series Under the Wings of God and Shoah Dreams, artist Akiva Kenneth Segan portrays some one hundred Holocaust victims, many of whom had been imprisoned in the Warsaw Ghetto. The drawings depict the victims with wings, an ironic metaphor for freedom, shelter and redemption.
